Bloody cheek

I have just received the most extraordinary letter, which comes signed jointly by Dominic Grieve, Attorney General and member of the Government.  The letter says, "We already know that legal aid for people facing legal problems... may be cut and those who cannot afford to pay for advice are going to find it very difficult to seek free legal help."

The letter then goes on to ask for a donation to the Access to Justice Foundation so that the charity can provide free legal advice to people in need.

Not only does the Government want to cut funding and thus put me and my employees out of work but now at least one member of the Government would also like me to fund my own replacement!

Incidentally, my firm does it's share of free work.  We regularly take part in things like Will Aid (where solicitors prepare wills free of charge and the receipient makes a donation to charity in lieu of paying a fee).  Also, on the 5th August 2011 we will be hosting a free legal advice day at our offices where local people can make an appointment to come and see our solicitors completely free of charge to get some practical advice on dealing with their problems.

    West Mids Police used regulation A190 to force officers with more than 30 years service to retire then sent them a letter inviting them to become special constables.

    The cheek indeed.

  Background - CPS served a witness statement on me that exhibited two BWV clips that are potentially relevant to the Crown’s case and may have some relevance to the defence case insofar as they are likely to show the lighting and weather at the time events happened. Somebody has listed the clips as unused material rather than putting them in the exhibits folder that accompanies the served evidence. This raised an interesting (to me anyway) question about whether a party who exhibits an item in a statement is bound to serve it on their opponent. At court the judge took the view that the Crown were at liberty to classify items exhibited in s9s as unused material if they chose not to rely upon them in evidence. Insurance is a contract that remains in force until it expires or is cancelled As you may, or may not, know I specialise in motoring law and most of my work involves defending people accused of drink driving . With the drink driving often come other road traffic offences such as driving while disqualified and driving without insurance. It’s driving without insurance I want to talk about today because I think far too many police officers, solicitors, barristers and judges miss a key legal point when looking at these cases. National Identity Cards

Many answered the call and came to be known as the Windrush Generation after named the MV Empire Windrush, which docked in Tilbury on the 22 nd June 1948 bringing the first workers from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago.
